:bootyshake: Hi Krissie

The road to VBAC can be a lonely one until you find supportive people. I encourage you to find a private midwife (:loveit:) as Lia has said and keep hope alive. Your doctor may make you feel dismayed for even attempting a VBAC. Don't be discouraged, it is very easy to give in to the common opinion. Once again Lia is right, pregnancies are risky but with continuous assessment and a go ahead, you can be given a trial of labour and eventually attempt natural birth. Do your research and follow your instinct. Don't give up.:goodluck:

Thank you Lia. Very relieved to get some advice. Im in Port Elizabeth and looking at St Georges hospital for my baby's birth. This pregnancy is going really well compared to my first pregnancy although it is still early. Am really hoping for the best as far as pre-ecclampsia goes. I have been put on aspirin once a day for the rest of my pregnancy and the 21 week scan i had on Monday showed that everything is going perfectly with excellent blood flow to my baby. I am alot more active with this pregnancy too as my little one is keeping me on the move and i have been trying to fast walk at least three evenings a week (i do about 3km's at a time).

I dont know of any midwives at all in my area and am not really familiar with how it all works. Do the doctors get offended if you say you would like someone else in with you or is it something they are used to?

Thank you for your help Lia.

Krissie,

Congrats on your pregnancy. You are asking some really relevant questions and I hope your new gynae is supportive of you wanting a VBAC.

Practically your chances should be good. If this pregnancy has been good and you are in good health and watching yourself so that the pre-eclampsia isn't an issue then you should be given a trial of labour.

I am not going to pretend otherwise but there is a risk with all pregnancies not just a VBAC so your chances are the same pretty much, the important thing is to have a caregiver that is comfortable doing VBAC irths. Not all doctors are okay with it as they have had little or no experience whereas those who had done their fair share are more willing to allow a TOL as they know from a practical point that it works for the most part.

There are times when a VBAC doesn't work but most women are happy to have at least tried and this in itself can be very healing too.

Midwives on the otherhand have much more experience with VBAC's and your chances of a successful VBAC increase dramatically by using a private midwife versus a doctor alone.

Where are you based and perhaps we can recommend some more options for you to ponder on?

Love and light

Lia

Hi there, am new to the site. Im currently 21 weeks pregnant with my second child. My son is 21 month old now. I have just change Gynae's and am going to speak to my new Gynae on Thursday as to my options of having VBAC.

I had pre-ecclampsia with my first pregnancy but was able to avoid an emergency caesar while in hospital at 35 weeks but felt terrible till week 38 when at a weak point my doctor said it would be best to have a caescar. I have regretted it ever since and hope for the chance to have a natural birth. What do you think my chances are and what are the risks to my little girl and myself.

Please help?

 And a successful experience it was!! :clappy:

Words cannot describe how I felt when my midwife perfromed vaginal check before she could summon the gynae to perform a ceasor. When she said 'fully dialted' I burst out in tears and oh what joy and relief filled my heart. I could not help but shout to the one who made it all possible, Jesus, Jesus! The uncertatinly was over. I had been at 6cm for over 3 hours and time was running out!
Natural birth is an experience that has changed my life. As I recall the experience now, tears fill my heart. What a wonderful team effort and a professional service I received from everyone. I gave birth at Genesis clinic and to my delight and to Xoli's (midwife) dream come true , the doula on duty during my labour is also a qualified reflexologist. She is a dear . She helped me through one of the most unique experiences life will ever present to us women.

To all those attempting a vbac, please do not be discouraged to change professionals if you feel that they are not with you 100%. Trust your instinct and voice your dissatisfaction. When I found out that I was pregnat, I knew I was could not go to my first gynae since she had already told me the 1ce a ceasor always a ceasor story. I looked for a gynae whom I thought would at least give me a trial of labour and I found one who told me if I did not dilate with my first pregnancy then I will not dilate agian!?! Imagine! I had trouble finding a pro VBAC active birth unit around pretoria so I found a midwife in joburg but she was not reliable/professional. At 26 weeks I started with a new midwife and the rest is history. My bouncing :baby: boy is now 6 months. When I get asked if it was natural or ceasor, I'm always proud to announce, VBAC!!

With all said and done, I can imagine why doctors/ gynaes are shy to perform vbacs. I exprerienced a lot of pressure/ discomfort on my scar as I dilated more and more. Which is why it requires close monitoring and a service that would cost them thousands of rands, and they would not want to do that now would they!!!!. Thank God for midwives :yourock:, with you ALL they way. What they do is out of this world.

This forum post manually restored

Hello

Lia - please could you also send me the contact details of the Doula in Durban as I am also looking for a pro-vbac Gynae. It's early days for me, only about

4 or 5 weeks along with my second baby. My son was born in Nov '06 (at 42 weeks) by c-section after a failed induction. I was with a midwife who I've heard

has since retired, the plan was a home water birth but after trying everything (I know of) to bring on labour naturally we went to Hospital for the induction

which failed leading to the c-section. It was a huge disapointment but I'm hoping to get it right this time round. Although my husband supports me 100%, he

wants us to go with a Gynae this time.

I look forward to any info and advice you have to offer and thank you for this wonderful forum.

Love
Siobhan

This forum post manually restored

Hi Essie,

I'm sorry to hear of your year end miscarriage and by now you/ve gone past that stage in this new pregnancy.
Wow! It must have been quite a roller coaster ride of emotions for you till now.

Please ask your friend for the studies indicating that vbamc are more dangerous. I'd like to have a provbac doctor read through to demystify the medical

jargon.
I can understand your friends concern for you and also your desire for a natural birth. I think once all the pros and cons are looked at objectively then you

can make your decision based on awareness of facts and what is right for you, which differs from person to person.
Also having a baby in general is not without it's risks. Yet women all over the world have babies every day. Sometimes we do it 2 ,3 ,4 or more times. The

risks associated with a VBAC or a VBAMC should be considered but within the perspective of having a child in general.

A fist time mother (or any mother having a baby) has a risk of near 2% for a prolapsed cord. This is a life threatening event for a baby. The chances of a

uterine rupture in a VBAC mother is between 0,3-0,7% and a VBAMC somewhere between 0.7-1.3% yet medical personnel often are appalled at women trying for a

VBAC but don't consider the very real and possible complications that sometimes may arise in all pregnant women.
This is one of life's biggest trials. To know what is best for us and then to follow through with it.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey as it is difficult to find pro-VBAC doctors.
Let us know what is happening and we can try to support you as much as possible.

Love and respect
Lia
xxx

This forum post manually restored

Hi Kee,

and congratulations on your pregnancy.
Your concern and worry is something to listen to as I'm sure you are nervous about something happening like what happened previously. Your worries at the

moment are also influencing your decisions and state of being. For yourself it would be a good idea to perhaps work through your previous birth story so that

you open a new space for this birth.
You've obviously been looking at all your options and have made some strong impressions already of how and where you would like to birth this new baby.

Listen to your gut and go with what it tells you. You will never led yourself into the wrong thing.
There are a few midwives at Genesis that do offer VBAC's. I have been a doula at many VBAC's with Sue King so I can highly recommend her. She has many, many

years experience. She also has a very high success rate with VBAC's. She is on the list of midwives working at Genesis so you can give her a call and

interview her.
Another wonderful midwife I've worked with and can recommend highly is Karen Van Der Merwe. She is very thorough and takes good care of her clients.
Both these midwives will give you every chance you need without putting you or your baby in danger. Both will listen to you and follow what it is you want to

do at each step of the way.

I wish you luck and look forward to hearing more of you as you travel through this exciting journey.

Love and trust
Lia
xxx
Regarding the overdue date there are some natural options you could try to help your body go into natural labour.

This forum post manually restored

Hi all

Sory for being gone for so long. Unfortunately I had an early miscarriag at about 6.4w. It started about 3 days before new years day with spotting(once a

day), got worse when we went to bed just after 12 new year, went to the local medi clinic (we were on holiday at my parents), got sent home to return at 11

because the doctor wanted to sleep as he had "a rough night". Just as I got up to go back I started bleeding and not spotting anymore. I lost the baby the

next day on our 1000km journey back home. My gyni saw me the same day and there was no baby. But ja, I survived that.
The great news. I am pregnant yet again. Today I am at same amount of time I had my miscarriage. Its a bit nerve wrecking. Keep expecting to see blood.

I am still looking into having a vba2c. This is something I really want.
I have spoken to a friend who is in her final year medical stoudies. She insists that "new studies" shows that a vba2c is just to dangerous. And I will never

find someone who will do it for me, as they can loose their licence if something goes wrong???????????

Now I am even more confused. I so want a normal birth.

We had originally planned a home water birth

with a mid-wife but I had not dilated by this time, so was sent to a Gynae 4 my c-sec...Our daughter swollowed her first meconium and had be resusitated at

birth so I am a bit nervous of going so far along in the pregnancy this time...

We have looked at Linkwood and Parklane (expecting to have another c-sec), when we happened to visit my Gynae at Genesis Clinic (which incidently we love!!!)

and it was suggested we look into a VBAC...

My questions are:
1. How do i find a mid-wife with VBAC experience operating out of Genesis (i'm a bit nervous to go that route again after our previous experience with a

midwife and would love some references)
2.What are the chances of me going the full 42 weeks again in this pregnancy(it is an awefully long time to be pregnant)?
I would love any input or info!!
Thanks
Kee
